Square Scribbles

Intro

Digital art is no different from the art we have seen in the past; only the medium and the tools have changed. This time, the tools are a mouse, a graphometric pen or a keyboard instead of a brush, a pencil or fingers – although the latter can also be used on digital media – while the medium are a PC screen, a tablet or a smartphone instead of canvas, paper or a wall.

Instead of oil, tempera or another base such as acrylic or watercolor, all colors will be made of colored points of light: pixels. The latter are the smallest part of the digital work of art (even if in reality they are composed of at least three subpixels), as any digital work of art is always a collection of pixels, which, however small, will collectively evoke emotions and thoughts just like other works of art. In order to illuminate the pixels, and thus to be created or observed, the digital work of art needs electrical energy, which is the energy from which this new type of art has developed and needs.

Moreover, whether the digital work of art is made through an algorithm, which is always a human creation or whether it is made directly by humans, or a mixture of both, it remains a work of art because it is directly or indirectly created by humans.

The fact that it is possible to identify a digital work of art as authentic by means of NFTs, in the sense of unequivocally associating it with an artist, has provided the final step in terms of placing digital works of art on an equal footing with the works of art of the past, since any copies, which in this case can be identical to the original yet still remain imitation works, are identified by means of less thorough analysis than in the past because already inside the network, in particular a blockchain (in the case of identical works, the date of entry in the blockchain will prevail to establish its authenticity, for example). So a digital work of art can now be framed and hung in an electronic frame where its authenticity brings it the same charm as past works of art, and there’s greater ease of exchange, storage and traceability of the digital work of art as well as adaptability to the dimensions of the frame. Furthermore, digital work of art can be dynamic in a frame or become so with a tap on the screen.

Art galleries have also changed, now through the network it is the galleries that go to people and not vice versa, while social media have become the main advertising medium.

The world's leading auction houses such as Christie's and Sotheby's have begun to promote this new type of art, introducing both audiences and artists. The most used online platform for the exchange of NFTs is OpenSea, where in fact the two main auction houses mentioned above have started selling works of art by opening an account each one: OpenSea Christie's, OpenSea Sotheby's. Although, probably, the two auction houses will auction through either their metaverse, such as Sotheby's Metaverse, or their own platform, such as Christie's 3.0.

The most used blockchain on OpenSea, and in general for NFTs, is that of Ethereum and therefore NFTs can be purchased with the Ether cryptocurrency with the symbol ETH. To obtain ETH you must convert a fiat currency, such as EUR, into ETH after having deposited the desired sum in fiat currency in your E-Wallet, the best known is Metamask, although there are other methods for converting fiat currency into cryptocurrency. The E-Wallet is also used to connect and buy and/or participate in auctions on NFTs platforms, such as OpenSea and Christie's 3.0, and is the protected personal virtual place where the works of art will end up once purchased. Finally, by connecting your E-Wallet to a digital frame (for example Tokenframe) it will be possible to enjoy them with greater security as the works of art will always be kept in the E-Wallet.

NFTs are the latest step of technology in digital art that adapts it to the past; the latter is the art of this time and will be for the foreseeable future.

My Art

My name is Ponge and I draw driven by a flow, and this happens at any time of the day using mainly a tablet or even a smartphone. My works derive from a state of concentration such as to feel a little above boredom and a little below stress, Jackson Pollock summarized what I mean:

«When I am "in" my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.»

The feeling of unconsciousness due to being guided by the flow I feel in those moments of creation is total. Such a flow state is a documented discovery in the world of psychology, also called "optimal experience" by its discoverer, psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi.

The difference compared to abstract expressionism, of which Pollock is a part, is that thanks to technology, now the work of art is the entire creation phase of which the end is only a part. Abstract expressionism is therefore characterized by including in the work of art the state of flow that leads to the creation of the work of art itself, transforming it from static to dynamic.

The Square Scribbles are squares of 1500 pixels per side (ca. 2 million pixels - Full HD) whose video of the realization in MP4 is about 1,5 MB, created by recording from the first stroke to the last and compressing the video often in about 7 seconds. They do not have a direction and I also do not consider the sides during the creation. I don't know when I'm in a state of flow and create a Square Scribble, days or months can go from one Square Scribble to another.

I hope Square Scribbles evoke emotions when viewed and I want them to share the thought of a dynamic pictorial digital art where all the process of creation resulting from the state of flow is the work of art, not just the final part.

I only use OpenSea to promote my works of art on the Ethereum blockchain, so to buy a Square Scribble visit my art gallery on OpenSea:
